00:00 Introduction
Diplomático is a renowned brand and distillery of aged rums. Planas, their white rum offering, is the lesser-known of their offerings. In this video, it is reviewed with the use of the Bespoke Unit liquor formula, a quantifiable review matrix that you can use for your own tasting purposes. A copy of this rum's filled-out formula can be downloaded at the review link above.
00:54 Rum Overview
Diplomático in Venezuela has grown to become an aged-rum staple in many people's rum and spirits cabinets. The Planas white rum is aged up to six years in small casks but it's filtered with charcoal in order to give it that plain white color.
The ABV of this Diplomático Planas is 47% and, as is indicated on the bottle, it has been approved by the master distiller and is intended to be a sipping rum. For most rum drinkers a white rum is generally thought of as a rum to be mixed with Coke (or another soda.) Likewise, many white rums serve as the base for daiquiris or other cocktails. Yet, with the Planas, it should first be sipped so one may really appreciate this high-quality rum all by itself.
02:42 Robe & Appearance
This Diplomático rum's color is perfectly clear and translucent with a very thick viscosity. The pearls on the side of the glass are run down quite slowly.
03:01 Nose
Right away, the nose elucidates alcohol thanks to the 47% ABV; this is definitely more noticeable than your regular white rum. After that, there's a pleasing note of coconut flake and freshly ground white pepper. There are also notes of fresh lemon and very light caramel.
A bit of American white oak and vanilla cream are evident, with custard towards the middle of the nasal expression. The finish is reminiscent of grass, hay, and a slight tarragon herbaceousness.
03:53 Palate & Mouthfeel
Diplomático Planas has a luscious, creamy velvety mouthfeel. It is quite sweet on the tongue with a thick and oily initial impact. The palate is mellow with notes of vanilla, honeysuckle, butterscotch, and a lot of toffee. There's also a bit of coconut flake as detected in the nose towards the very end.
There are herbaceous notes that give it a bit of zing; this lightens the sweetness that is prominent at the very beginning.
The finish is lingering, mellow, soft, and even elegant. It's easy to see why it's described as an aged sipping rum - you certainly can experience the depth and complexity imparted by prolonged aging.
05:07 Using Planas As A Mixer
The Planas is deliciously soft so it can definitely be had all by itself. Truly, you do not need to mix it with other fillers or juices, though it would serve as a premium mixing rum. Yet, sipping it is a great choice.
In a long cocktail, this aged white rum pairs beautifully with a bit of ginger beer. It's also a great base for daiquiris. With the 47% ABV, it stands up to mixing in cocktails, the ice, and the dilution perfectly. So it is for sure, also a wonderful (if expensive) mixing rum.
05:47 Presentation & Value For Money
The bottle possesses the traditional Diplomático profile though it's clearly differentiated by a white label. Naturally, the label is emblazoned with Don Juancho Melendez's portrait as it is on all Diplomático Rum bottles. Overall, it is a very neat and elegant presentation.
While this Planas rum is probably a notch above your traditional white rum, the quality in the delivery is definitely more complex and more robust.
06:31 Food Pairings
In terms of food pairings, I chose cantuccini (a sort of biscotti) with almonds, because the caramel and the sweetness and the vanilla go beautifully with the Planas as a little finger food snack.
If pairing with a cigar, I went for a VegaFina 1998. This cigar is smooth, harmonious, and balanced. However, it also has a richness and a depth, woodiness, and spice from the well-matured tobaccos and the dark wrapper. So it made for a beautiful combination with the Planas and an excellent overall pairing.
